On the ninth day of Christmas my good friends brought to me…🎁
As part of The LGA Foundation’s 12 Days of Christmas Campaign 🎁 North Benwell Youth Project (NBYP) were thrilled to receive funding from LGA 12 days of Christmas project. The Young People committee from North Benwell Youth Project, were involved in planning three separate Christmas projects.
For the first project, they made 50+ well-being packs for children and young people aged 8-16, which they named a ‘hug in a box’. The packs included colouring books and pencils, face masks (girls), puzzles (for boys), scented relaxing candle (for older ones), small soft toy (for younger ones) pillow spray, cosy socks, bath bombs, personal hygiene products and make positive message cards, known as a ‘hug in your pocket.’
The wellbeing packs will create a sense of being cared for, boost self-esteem, and encourage positive routines. In an area where access to support is limited, well-being packs act as a bridge to services and safe spaces.
For their second project, They took a group of Mums and their children to the Newcastle Leazes Park Light Trail. This included 6 adults and 12 children. Some of the mums have 2-3 children, so it would be too costly for them. They wanted to support the Mums group to help create community cohesion, boost mental well-being, and create happy memories. It will help the group to access enriching experiences, promotinga sense of inclusion and reducing isolation.
For their third project, they wanted to reach the wider community by organising two Christmas craft days for parents/residents. These were a great success; we provided hot drinks and cake. They have taken part in a wreath-making session and created Santa Claus ornaments and light up present boxes.
The community craft days brought people together at a stressful time of year, especially for those struggling financially or with their mental well-being. It was an inclusive space where people of all ages and backgrounds could bond, share stories, and celebrate local culture. By removing financial barriers, they ensured equal access to enrichment. Taking part in creative crafts can build skills and confidence.
The YPC have spent many hours planning, shopping and creating the events. They will be developing an array of skills, including planning, budgeting, marketing, delegation, reliability, and leadership. This list is not exhaustive.
