Greg Reece Meets Local Projects

In a heartening day of engagement, Greg Reece, accompanied by Trustee Dianne Mackay, visited several youth-focused initiatives across Newcastle, reaffirming the LGA Foundation’s commitment to supporting meaningful change across the local community.

Odysseus Mentoring Project (OMP)

Part of NE Youth and formerly the Northumbria Coalition Against Crime, this vital project provides one-to-one mentoring for vulnerable 8–15 year olds, with many exposed to violence and at risk of offending. 82% of those supported by OMP are not reoffending, the project has shown clear impact. Greg and Dianne met staff, mentors, and young people benefiting from the service, including a young man who credited OMP for helping him return to education and rediscover his love of music.

Ocean Road Centre

A promising new youth provision led by experienced youth worker, Dean Curry. Dean has already engaged over 30 hard to reach young men through street-based outreach.

The new hub, part of a wider YIF-funded development, will offer access to sports and accredited Duke of Edinburgh activities. The centre is a thriving space for the wider community, strengthened by LGA Foundation’s support.

Projects4Change (P4C)

Greg and Dianne also visited the expanded ‘Toastie Club’, now hosted in a brand-new hut called ‘The Cow Shed’, thanks to YIF support. The club serves over 100 young people weekly with creative and social activities—from arts and crafts to outdoor campfires. Greg met Kelly and the team behind this ever growing project and heard firsthand how the project is keeping young people off the streets and engaged in positive experiences. Continued funding was recommended to meet increasing demand.

These visits highlighted the incredible passion and dedication behind each project, and the life-changing impact that even small grants can make. The LGA Foundation is proud to support these transformative local efforts and looks forward to what’s ahead.
